Types of Mandala Art
Different cultures have different Mandalas, which are used for a multitude of purposes, both spiritually and artistically. So have you ever wondered how many types of mandala art there are? Let’s look at main types of Mandalas and their usage.
Teaching Mandala
These are symbolic, and each color, shape, and line represents the different religious and philosophical systems. Students come up with their intuitive writing as per the construction and design principles, revealing the visual symbolization of whatever they have learned. It works as colorful mental maps for their creators.
Healing Mandala
The main purpose of healing the Mandala is meditation, which is more intuitive than teaching Mandala. It delivers wisdom, generates peace and calm, and enhances focus and concentration.
Sand Mandala
Earlier, Buddhist monks used sand mandalas as a tradition. Such designs represent various symbols made from colored sand and show the impermanence of human life.
Flower Mandala
These mandalas can be made from any material, but their main component will be flowers, especially the petals
These mandalas can be symbols of rebirth, spiritual enlightenment, eternal life of the soul, self-love, balance, and other things.
Symbolism in Mandalas
Within the circular pattern of the Mandala, you can notice some common symbols. Traditionally they abstractly represent Buddha’s mind, usually depicted as a tree, wheel, flower, or jewel. The center is a dot that showcases free of dimensions; it is the starting point. Then you can see lines and geometric patterns surrounding the dots, which symbolize the universe, followed by the outer circle, which depicts the cyclical nature of life.
Common Symbols present in Mandala art:
Wheel with eight spokes: The mandala represents a perfect universe artistically through a circular wheel. These eight folds stand for Buddhism’s eightfold path, showing practices leading to rebirth and liberation.
Bell: Bells show the mind’s emptying and openness to allow wisdom and clarity in mind.
Triangle: An upward-facing triangle depicts energy and action, while a downward-facing triangle shows creativity and knowledge pursuit.
Lotus Flower: It is a sacred symbol in Buddhism, where lotus symmetry indicates balance. Like the lotus, which reaches upward from underground water, a human also reaches spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
Sun: It is a renowned mandala pattern that reflects the universe and carries meanings related to energy and life.
